On the east coast of the province of Chubut we can visit Puerto Madryn, located on the shores of the azure waters of Golfo Nuevo, on a cliff plateau 120 m above sea level. This city is the gateway to the Valdes Peninsula, which in 1999 was declared a World Heritage Site. As the national capital of diving, Puerto Madryn has built numerous artificial reefs that are chosen for traditional underwater baptisms. In the summer, seven seaside resorts with all the necessary infrastructure are the setting for practicing numerous water activities. They are also natural viewpoints in the whale season (from June to December). During the day, groups of whales can be spotted from the shore; at night, the sound of these animals bathes the coasts of Madryn, creating a unique atmosphere.

Although orcas are very difficult to be spotted since their behavior is unpredictable, the recommended time to try it is from January to April and from October to December. Other species in the area, such as elephant seals and sea lions, Commerson’s dolphins and birds in general, can be seen throughout the year.

Because of its latitude, summer has up to 16 hours of daylight, while winter barely reaches 8 hours of daylight. If snow sports are not your priority, your best time to go is between October and April, due to the more pleasant weather conditions. If the purpose of the trip is skiing, the months of July and August are the best choice. During the winter months, the landscape is completely covered with snow, creating a dreamy image. The months of March and April are excellent to enjoy autumn colors and a more stable climate.

Something that you cannot leave out on your trip to Argentina is the Perito Moreno Glacier, which along with twelve other glaciers, is the largest sliding mass of snow and ice of Los Glaciares National Park. This 5 km wide glacier, with an average height of 60 meters above the Argentino Lake, continues to advance.
